I’m about halfway through my latest series about Eunice Foote. It’s been a fantastic joy to make the series. Why? John Perlin of the Physics Department at the University of California in Santa Barbara conducted research on Eunice Newton Foote and wrote an as-yet-unpublished scientific biography about her. I learned about his work from the Washington Post and reached out to him. He was happy to help with my project. Toen fotohistoricus Róman Kienjet me vroeg of hij me mocht interviewen voor zijn nieuwe boek ‘Licht’, was ik natuurlijk meteen vereerd. Voor dat boek sprak hij veertien Nederlandse fotografen en beeldmakers over de totstandkoming van hun werk, over het reilen en zeilen van een toonaangevende studio, over (artistieke) keuzes, over hun voorkeur en hun liefde voor bepaalde materialen en over afdrukprocedés. Ik riep wel meteen: “…maar ik fotografeer niet meer”. Gelukkig vond hij dat niet erg en was juist nieuwsgierig naar het hoe en waarom ik mijn camera inruilde voor de kwast.
