‘De Landvrouw’ is a series about Nynke Postma (1902-1980), female farmer in Piaam, Friesland. The original family consisted of father, mother, four sisters and a foster brother. Mother died in 1941 and one by one the children married and left the parental home. Except for Nynke, who never married and continued to live on the farm. When her father also died, she ran the farm on her own. Until she couldn’t take it anymore..
The painting ‘Aan de bint’ nods of course to the famous painting by Vincent Van Gogh in which simple farm life is reflected. With the difference that this painting mainly revolves around the women in the farming family that is depicted. Nynke’s family had a simple, modest mixed farm. The hard farm life of the early twentieth century was the daily truth for many families at that time, as well as for Nynke.
