The androgynous ‘Vita’ painting was named after English writer Victoria Mary Sackville-West – nickname Vita (1892 – 1962). Vita lived an aristocratic life and is remembered for her strong connection to her husband, regardless of her affairs with women, such as those with Violet Trefusis and Virginia Woolf. Her love for her own sex, expressed at the time, however, did not diminish the deep connection she could experience towards her husband.

The relationship for which Sackville-West was best known was with the writer Virginia Woolf in the late 1920s. Woolf wrote one of her most famous books, Orlando, resulting from this relationship.

Woolf writes in her diary on October 5, 1927, “And suddenly the usual thrilling images came to mind: a biography beginning in 1500 and continuing to the present day, entitled Orlando: Vita; only with a change of one sex in the others.”
