‘Asking Elsa’ tells the story of a 17-year-old girl named Elsa who came to live in the Netherlands from Sweden just before the outbreak of WWI because a strange man stood at her door shortly before asking her father for her hand. Elsa happens to be the photographers great grand mother. Together with her daughter Schols explores how it must have been for her ancestor to be taken away from her natural habitat at a vulnerable age in a vulnerable time.
