The good mountains by Jitske Schols is a part of her photo essay about Jacqueline Elisabeth van der Waals, an unfairly forgotten Dutch romantic poet of the early 20th century. Although she entered the circles of famous Dutch poets like Herman Gorter, Jacqueline would soon be forgotten by the general public after her death in 1922, aged 53 years old. Some think Jacqueline has done injustice in the course of literary history due to that one malicious poem, for which her entire oeuvre has been punished.
Jacqueline and her family spent a number of weeks at Ewijckshoeve every summer, the place where Jitske Schols grew up decades later. The young poet got to love climbing during the family travels to the mountainous areas, and nature is a recurrent theme in her works. The titles of the artworks refer to fragments of her poems; the colours throughout the series are borrowed from the cover of the little book that Jitske has of her.
“I want to be nothing but a voice, one of those many voices that sound up loud or silent from people’s hearts.”
