Description

Nobody’s Dollhouse is inspired by the life of Elizabeth Cochran Seaman (1864–1922), known as Nellie Bly, an exceptional journalist famous for her undercover investigations and fearless reporting at a time when women were largely excluded from serious news work. She exposed corruption, challenged institutions, and traveled the world on assignments few dared to attempt. When she joined the Pittsburgh Dispatch in 1885, her editor wanted a catchy pseudonym for a female reporter. They landed on “Nellie Bly,” taken from Stephen Foster’s 1850 song Nelly Bly, a sentimental homecoming tune about a young woman returning to her hometown along the Ohio River. Nothing political, just a familiar 19th-century crowd-pleaser. It was catchy, musical, and reader-friendly, but the editor misspelled it and it became her public identity.
