Description

These ‘Hidden Gems’ within the Nobody’s Dollhouse series represent the women confined to asylums in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century: women who were silenced, isolated, and often never truly returned to society. Acrylic on soapstone, the sculptures appear fossilized or petrified, echoing lives that were observed and controlled, but rarely listened to. Inspired by the story of investigative journalist Nellie Bly, who exposed the brutal conditions inside the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island, the works reflect on exclusion, power, and the quiet disappearance of women whose voices were systematically ignored. Each stone is unique.
