‘Aeltje’ (The mothers before) is a portrait inspired on Aeltje (or Aeltie) Pyters Rommersdr. Sylvius – van Uylenburgh (1572-1638), immediate ancestor of mine, 13 generations back. She married reformed minister Johannes Cornelius Sylvius in 1595 and in the next 16 years she gave birth to no less than 10 children. It was said that her husband was a good-natured person. An interesting fact is that her niece, Saskia van Uylenburgh, became Rembrandt van Rijn’s wife. For that reason Aeltje and her husband Johannes were portrayed by the great master several times. Also she witnessed at the baptism of Titus. It could well be that mr. Sylvius introduced Saskia to Rembrandt, although that is not sure. Aged 66 Aeltje died and was buried in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.
To introduce our ancestors to my daughter and tell their stories, I make paintings inspired on them. In the series ‘The mothers before’ I explore the women who made me come into this world. Knowing more about family connections, previous generations, historical events and other interesting related facts can help put your own life in perspective in order to learn more about yourself. A world from a bygone era brought back to the present unfolds.
