Description

NELLIE BLY (1864–1922) was an American journalist, writer, and pioneer of investigative reporting. She became famous for her undercover exposés, her advocacy for social reform, and her record-breaking journey around the world in 72 days.

This painting ‘A parlor skill’ is part of Nobody’s Dollhouse, a series inspired by Nellie Bly’s life and legacy. It reflects on the piano lessons Nellie was expected to take as a girl, intertwined with my own memories of early-1980s living-room music evenings, when friends of my mother would gather at home, each bringing along an instrument to play together.
