How to connect with art (and why it matters)

Many people love art, but not everyone knows how to truly connect with it. Whether you’re a collector, a casual admirer, or just curious about what happens in an artist’s world, engaging with art can be more than just looking—it can be a meaningful part of your life. Here’s how you can connect with my work (or any art) in a way that feels natural and rewarding.

1. Follow the stories

Every painting I create is part of a larger narrative—forgotten women in history, moments of being, untold herstories. If you find a story that intrigues you, dive deeper! Read about the women behind the paintings, reflect on their lives, and see if something resonates with your own.

2. Visit my studio (or take a virtual tour)

Seeing paintings in real life is different from scrolling through them online. Colors, textures, and even the energy of a piece come across differently when you’re standing in front of it. If you’re in the area, come by! If not, we can meet via Zoom—I love talking about my work and hearing what people see in it.

3. Engage on social media

Art isn’t just about creating—it’s about sharing. If you follow me on Instagram (@jitskeschols), you’ll see my creative process, behind-the-scenes moments, and upcoming projects. Comment, share, ask questions—I read everything and love connecting with people who are drawn to my work.

4. Bring art into your life

Art is more than just decoration; it’s a way to connect with stories, emotions, and history. When you bring a painting into your life, you invite a new perspective into your space—one that can challenge, inspire, or comfort you. My work is deeply rooted in storytelling, focusing on women whose contributions have been overlooked. Through my paintings, I bring their stories to light, giving them the recognition they deserve and inviting you to engage with their histories in a personal way. And especially in the current political climate, it feels good to surround yourself with stories and things that matter.

Whether you buy a piece, borrow one, or simply let an image stay with you, art has the power to shift perspectives. If a painting speaks to you, let’s talk about making it part of your world. And if you’re not ready for that yet, no problem—keep watching, keep feeling, keep exploring.

5. Be part of the journey

Art is not just about finished paintings. It’s about discovery, mistakes, breakthroughs, and stories waiting to be told. If you like what I do, stay curious. Sign up for my newsletter, visit my exhibitions, and let’s keep the conversation going.
